November 8, 2022 – AFI received a donation for the highly anticipated Henry Sy, Sr. Hall from US-based Starkey Hearing Technologies through its founder, principal owner, and chairman Dr. William Austin and Mrs. Tani Austin. This partnership was made possible through the bridging of Dr. Norberto Martinez, AFI Trustee and Treasurer and UST-FMS Department Chair of Otorhinolaryngology. Committed to the vision of helping the world hear better, Starkey generously donated the amount of USD 200 Thousand for the naming rights to the Audiology Laboratory in the Henry Sy, Sr. Hall. The donation shall be used exclusively for the purchase and maintenance of equipment of the said facility.
More than his innovativeness and business acumen that grew his company to be one of the largest manufacturers of hearing aid in the world, Dr. Austin is consistently being recognized for his philanthropic work. According to the website of Starkey, his numerous awards include: the Horatio Alger Award, Mexico’s Aztec Eagle Award, the Jefferson Award, the Albert Schweitzer Leadership Award, the National Caring Award, the Humanitarian Award from Variety International, and the AG Bell Lifetime Achievement Award. At the United Nations in 2017, Bill Austin was named the first Goodwill Global Ambassador for Ear and Hearing Health. Most recently, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 50th annual Tri-State Hearing Convention, and was named the 2022 Career Achievement honoree in Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal’s Minnesota Manufacturing Awards.
With an Audiology Laboratory at the Henry Sy, Sr. Hall named after him, future UST-FMS students and faculty who will benefit from its research and simulation laboratories will continuously be reminded of Dr. Austin’s innovation and generosity, inspiring the next generation of Thomasian doctors to do the same.
